Workshop Aims to Strengthen Tamaraw Protection in Mindoro

A recent law enforcement forum gathered key stakeholders in Mindoro to strengthen efforts in protecting the critically endangered Tamaraw. The workshop focused on improving coordination and laying the groundwork for the development of clear guidelines and protocols specific to Tamaraw conservation.

Despite decades of conservation work, there are still no standardized procedures guiding field enforcement. Current practices are mostly based on traditional knowledge and vary across Tamaraw habitats. To address this, participants shared updates on patrolling strategies, identified site-specific practices, and discussed the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for unified actions.

Key discussions revealed that Tamaraw population estimates may be lower than previously estimated, with some areas like Aruyan-Malati hosting fewer than 15 individuals. Threats such as illegal logging, charcoal making, kaingin, poaching, and land-use pressure continue to put the species at risk. Field rangers face limited resources, difficult terrain, and a lack of training and safety support, including communication tools and insurance.

Participants called for stronger collaboration among DENR, LGUs, army, and NGOs; regular ranger training; updated patrol systems; and clear SOPs. Engaging local communities, especially Indigenous Peoples, and offering sustainable livelihood alternatives were also emphasized.

The forum concluded with a collective push to draft a unified Tamaraw protection framework. This will include crime reporting procedures, patrol guidelines, and support mechanisms for rangers, among which are essential steps in ensuring the survival of the Tamaraw and the biodiversity of Mindoro.
