Orientation and Capacity Needs Workshop Unites Tamaraw Landscape Stakeholders

On February 20–21, 2025, a two-day orientation and capacity needs assessment workshop was held at Seasons Hotel, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, gathering key stakeholders involved in Tamaraw conservation. The event brought together representatives from higher education institutions (HEIs), DepEd, LGUs, DENR, DOST, PNP, and other partner agencies to strengthen collaboration for the protection and management of the Tamaraw landscape.

The workshop introduced the Thriving Together with Tamaraw Consortium and identified stakeholders’ roles and willingness to participate in future conservation activities. A Training Needs Assessment (TNA) helped map institutional capacities and gaps, providing a basis for building strategic conservation plans.

Day 1 focused on HEIs and DepEd, exploring how academic institutions can support Tamaraw conservation through education, research, and community extension. Day 2 engaged LGUs, DENR, rangers, and other government agencies to discuss governance, enforcement, and technical support.

Key findings showed strong stakeholder interest in collaboration, but also revealed capacity gaps in technical training, resources, and policy support. Challenges such as limited ranger equipment, need for simplified communication, and sustainability of partnerships were raised. The workshop highlighted the importance of regular engagement, clear roles, and prioritization of support efforts moving forward.

The event marked an important step toward building a unified, multi-sectoral approach to Tamaraw conservation.
